Why email sequences work
Lesson 20 Module 4
Your email series is an extremely important step in the customer journey. Without this crucial step you have an email list full of subscribers, but no true members of your tribe.
The purpose of your email sequence is to build trust and establish yourself as the one person who is perfect to solve their problems.
Here's why email sequences work.
It's one step at a time
If you ask people on your blog post to fork over $500 for a product, nobody will buy it.
So how do people ever sell expensive products? By climbing the trust ladder, step by step.
Here are the levels:
- Engaging content
- Helpful lead magnet
- Tripwire that overdelivers
- Email sequence that builds trust (5-10 emails)
- $500 product offer
You can't get there from a blog post, but you can get there with an email sequence - as long as you take things one step at a time.
If you mess up the order, you will not make any money. It's like relationships. There's an introduction, an exchange of contact information, dating and then you seal the deal.
Guiding them towards a buying position
Your email sequence will take subscribers on a journey. At the beginning, they will start with a problem - a problem you also once had.
In the middle of this journey, you'll drill down on how bad this problem was and how good it felt to fix this problem.
In the last part of the journey, you'll share with them the solution that fixed this problem and changed your life forever.
Your email sequence will guide subscribers from a state of "problem-aware" to a state of "solution-aware" and finally to a state of "product-aware".
Trust = sales
Before someone throws money at you, they need to know, like, and trust you.
To build that trust you need to be authentic and a real person. That means not hiding behind a brand name or a logo.
It also means having a personality. Being boring, safe and generic has never gotten anybody anywhere.
You need to be your true self. Will this lead to people unsubscribing? Probably, but that's a good thing!
You only want rabid fans on your email list. Those are the only people who are going to buy anything from you anyway.
By being yourself, you will form a strong bond with your ideal reader. This is the secret sauce to making sales. Forming this kind of close connection.
And that's what your welcome email series will do.
Why you should sell to your list - without guilt
A lot of people get stuck at the last part of the email sequence. You know, the selling part. Many are conditioned into thinking that selling is sleazy or taking advantage of someone.
But think of it like this: you are solving their problems.
I had a major breakthrough with this years ago when a customer wrote me a message thanking me for helping them. This was after they spent a few hundred dollars. It was a real eye opener for me and I've never felt bad about selling ever since.
People who are on your email list are there by choice. There is an unsubscribe link at the bottom of every email.
Don't feel weird about offering a product (whether it's your own or an affiliate offer) or a service.
What matters is if the products you recommend are helpful to your subscribers.
Think of it this way, you are actually doing them a favor by offering something that can solve their problems.
